Yellow Horned-poppy is a striking coastal wildflower with brilliant yellow blooms and fascinating horn-shaped seed pods!
Yellow Horned-Poppy (Glaucium flavum), is a distinctive native wildflower perfectly adapted to life in challenging coastal conditions. Its large, silky, golden-yellow flowers stand out beautifully against its silvery-green, deeply lobed leaves, creating a wonderful contrast of colour and texture.
Naturally found on shingle beaches, coastal dunes and other sandy, free-draining habitats, Yellow Horned-Poppy is a superb choice for wildlife-friendly gardens with sunny, dry conditions. Once established, it thrives in poor soils and is well suited to exposed locations where many other plants struggle.
The bright, open flowers provide pollen for visiting insects, including bees and other pollinators.
After flowering, the plant produces remarkable long, curved seed pods that resemble horns — the feature that gives this unusual wildflower its common name. These distinctive pods add further interest and make it an intriguing plant to grow. Plant in full sun in sandy, gritty, stony or well-drained soil.
Height: 50 cm.
