General FAQs
Whatare native wildflowers?
Native wildflowers are plant species that naturally occur in a specific region and
have evolved over time alongside local wildlife, soil, and climate.
Whyshould I plant native wildflowers instead of non-native species?
Native plants are better adapted to local conditions, and more importantly they support much more native wildlife and pollinators.
Donative plants require less maintenance?
Yes, once established. They are naturally suited to local soils and weather, so they generally need less watering, fertiliser, and pest control.
Arenative wildflowers good for pollinators and other wildlife?
Native wildflowers are one of the best ways to support bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. These in turn attract insectivorous birds, reptiles, amphibians and small mammals.
Plant Selection
Which wildflowers are best for my area?
The best choices depend on your soil type, sunlight, and location. We recommend selecting plants that naturally grow in conditions similar to your garden. You can search by habitat or soil type on our website. E.g. if you are looking for plants that can tolerate shade, just type in ‘Shade’ in the search bar.
Do you sell plants suitable for different conditions?
Yes, we offer wildflowers for a range of environments, including full sun, shade, dry soils, and damp areas. You can search by habitat or soil type on our website. E.g. if you are looking for bog plants, just type in ‘Bog’ in the search bar.
How do I choose the right mix of wildflowers?
Start by assessing your site (sunlight, soil, moisture). From there, choose a mix
suited to those conditions. Work with your soil type and not against it.
Areyour plants grown locally?
Yes, all our native plants are grown at our nursery in Penllergare to ensure they are well adapted to the British climate.
Are you a peat free nursery?
Yes! We have always been a 100% peat free nursery using professional grade peat free compost.
Do you buy in seed?
No. We grow or hold seed of over 400 native species with assured British provenance. All the seed we use to grow our plants is hand collected by ourselves, processed and stored on site. We then sow this seed to grow our local provenance wildflowers. Note, we do not sell this seed, though we do buy in some seed upon request for specific projects.
Planting & Care
When is the best time to plant wildflowers?
Spring and autumn are ideal. Autumn planting produces stronger plants, as the roots have a longer period over the winter to harden off and establish.
How do I prepare my soil before planting?
This is variable, but typically clearing existing vegetation, remove undesirable weedy species, and lightly cultivate the soil will produce good results. Wildflowers prefer low-nutrient soils, so avoid adding fertiliser. If you are planting into grass, we recommend you sow Yellow Rattle seed in the Autumn. This seed likes to stratify over the winter.
How often should I water wildflowers?
If it is dry for a period after planting, watering during the establishment phase. Thereafter, most native wildflowers require little additional watering.
Do wildflowers come back every year?
Annuals are as the same suggest, plants that survive one season. Through they will deposit seed and if suitable, will grow next year. Biennials grow the first year, flower the second year and then they die. Perennials return each year and form the majority of the plants we grow. Appropriate management is important for maintaining and developing flower rich habitats, in many cases a late summer cut, removing the arisings, is all that may be required.
How long does it take for wildflowers to bloom?
Annuals may bloom within a few months. Perennials take longer, sometimes even one to two years to fully establish.
Do I need to use fertiliser?
No, wildflowers generally thrive in poorer soils. Fertiliser can encourage grasses and ‘weedy’ species to become overly dominant.
Wildlife & Ecology
Which wildflowers attract bees and butterflies?
There is a wide range of native species attract pollinators, in fact every native flowering species has a suite of associated invertebrates that will utilise a plants flowers fruits or foliage, providing biodiversity. Our pollinator mixes are specifically designed to provide nectar throughout the growing season. You can search our website by typing in ‘Pollinators’ or ‘bees’ in the search bar on our website.
Will wildflowers help support local biodiversity?
Yes, planting native wildflowers is the easiest way to create habitats and food sources for the multitude of insects, birds, and other wildlife found in Britain.
Are your plants safe for pets and livestock?
Most native wildflowers are safe, but some species can be toxic. We recommend checking individual plant details if you have concerns.
Do wildflowers attract unwanted pests?
Not typically. A healthy wildflower area encourages beneficial insects that help keep pests in balance.
Seeds, Plants & Orders
Do you sell seeds, plugs, or fully grown plants?
We offer British provenance seed for our seed packets that we buy in, as we cannot financially sell on our local provenance hand collected seed. ALL of our plants are grown from OUR own locally collected seed to grow and sell plugs, 9cm pots, 1L and 2L pots etc.
What is the difference between seeds and plugs?
Seeds are more economical and ideal for larger areas. Plug plants are young plants that establish more quickly and give more reliable results.
How many plants do I need?
We normally suggest planting 10-15 plants per square metre for impact planting, such as in small garden beds or planters. For large areas, we suggest cluster planting in groups of 5 in areas from which plants can set seed and spread naturally.

Troubleshooting
Why didn’t my wildflowers germinate?
Common reasons include poor soil preparation, incorrect sowing time, lack of moisture, or competition from weeds.
Why are weeds growing in my wildflower area?
Weeds are natural in early stages. Proper preparation and ongoing management will help wildflowers establish dominance.
What should I do if my plants look unhealthy?
Check watering, soil conditions, and sunlight. If problems persist, feel free to contact us for advice.
