Star Sedge is a graceful native sedge with distinctive star-shaped flower clusters, perfect for damp meadows, boggy areas and wildlife gardens.
A beauttiful sedge named for the distinctive star-like arrangement of its flowering spikes. It forms neat, softly arching clumps of slender green leaves and brings delicate texture and movement to naturalistic planting.
In late spring and summer, Star Sedge produces slender flowering stems topped with small clusters of flowers. As the seedheads develop, the female spikes spread out around the stem, creating the characteristic star-shaped appearance that gives this attractive sedge its common name.
It naturally occurs in damp grassland, wet heath, bogs, marshes and woodland clearings, making it an excellent choice for wildlife gardens and planting schemes where the soil remains reliably moist. It prefers acidic to neutral soils and thrives in full sun or light shade.
Star Sedge is an understated but valuable addition to a native planting scheme. Its foliage provides cover and shelter for small invertebrates, while its presence helps recreate the varied structure of natural wetland and meadow habitats.
