Sea Spurge is a perennial that thrives on free-draining mobile or semi-stable sand dunes. It also occurs along the drift-line of sandy foreshores and occasionally on shingle. It is a robust, perennial spurge with thick, grey-green foliage, which grows in open sandy areas and shingle in coastal habitats.
When damaged or broken, like other spurge species, Sea Spurge exudes a sticky, acrid, white latex which is a serious eye and skin irritant. The latex also contains small amounts of rubber. It has an exclusively coastal distribution in Britain and Ireland but is absent from most of Scotland.
