Jointed Rush is a graceful native rush, easily recognised by its slender green stems divided into obvious sections or “joints”. These attractive segmented stems give the plant its common name and provide a lovely architectural quality in naturalistic planting.

A hardy perennial, Jointed Rush thrives in damp and wet soils and is particularly well suited to pond edges, wet meadows, marshes, ditches and other naturally moist habitats. It can grow in full sun or light shade and is an excellent choice for areas where many traditional wildflowers may struggle.

During summer, Jointed Rush produces delicate clusters of small brownish-green flowers towards the ends of its stems. The flowers are subtle rather than showy, but are an important part of the plant's role within wetland habitats.

Its upright, fine-textured growth provides structure, shelter and cover for small insects and other wildlife, while its ability to tolerate wet ground makes it valuable for creating or enhancing wildlife-friendly habitats.

Jointed Rush is an excellent native choice for pond margins, rain gardens, wetland areas and damp wildlife gardens, helping to recreate the character and biodiversity of Britain's natural wetlands.
