Grey-leaved Whitebeam is a distinctive native tree / large shrub, valued for its attractive foliage, clusters of white spring flowers and bright red autumn fruits. It is a particularly special species for conservation, as it is native only to England and Wales and has a restricted natural distribution.

Naturally occurs in open woodland, scrub, rocky slopes, cliffs and quarries.  Prefers sunny or lightly shaded positions and well-drained soils, often those rich in lime, including limestone and sandstone habitats.

A rare and threatened native tree

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has assessed Grey-leaved Whitebeam as Vulnerable (VU) on the global Red List. The published assessment estimated that only around 300 mature individuals remained, with the overall population showing a declining trend. These figures come from the assessment last dated 2015, published in 2017, so they should be understood as historical estimates rather than a confirmed current count.

Its limited distribution and small population make it an important species for native tree conservation. Growing and planting locally appropriate native trees can help support efforts to protect Britain's distinctive botanical heritage.
