A perennial of well drained and often nutrient enriched soils on roadsides, banks, waste places and disturbed areas in fields, commonly in urban and coastal areas. It is an attrtactive palat with ivy-shaped leaves and conspicuous, pinkish purple flowers with prominent, dark veins. It is the most common and widespread mallow in the British Flora.

It is a drought tolerant plant and a good source of nectar for insects throughout the summer.
