A low-growing perennial that sprawls along the ground in wet places, rooting itself as it grows. In open muddy habitats it can form quite dense stands and it is tolerant of partial shade atlong wet tracks at the  edges of woodland. The relatively wide, unstalked and somewhat fleshy leaves and the pale blue flowers on long stalks make it a quite distinctive speedwell. It is a very common plant in most of Britain and Ireland, except for the mountainous areas of Scotland.

Provides important cover for tadpoles and sticklebacks
