Black Spleenwort is a beautiful small native fern found naturally in rocky places, walls, cliffs and other well-drained habitats. Its fresh green fronds grow from distinctive dark, almost black stems, giving this understated fern a particularly attractive appearance.
Perfect for rockeries, dry stone walls, banks, shady corners and wildlife-friendly gardens, Black Spleenwort is an excellent choice where you want to create a more natural, woodland or rocky habitat.
Despite its delicate appearance, it is a hardy perennial and, once established, requires very little maintenance. It is particularly suited to free-draining, stony or alkaline soils and prefers partial shade, although it can tolerate more exposed positions where conditions are suitable.
Black Spleenwort is a wonderful addition to a wildlife garden and helps recreate the character of natural rocky habitats.
