BEE ORCHID Ophrys apifera

£0.00
By Celtic Wildflowers

Tegeirian y Gwenyn

A very unusual looking flower, found in short, dry calcareous grassland and scrub land. It will grow in a rockery or container with grit and limestone.

The flower resembles the body of a bumble bee - male bees try to mate with it and instead pollinate the flower! But the correct bee species doesn't live in the UK so bee orchids here pollinate themselves.

Height: Up to 45cm

Flowers: June to July

Colour: Purple
