STINKING IRIS Iris foetidissima
STINKING IRIS Iris foetidissima
Iris Ddrewllyd
A tall evergreen plant with glossy green strappy leaves and large purple and yellow flowers. Only to be replaced by arguably even more attractive, very large seed pods, that burst open revealing bright coral red berries, that brighten even the darkest corner of a garden providing food for birds well into the winter and early spring. The foliage has a meaty small when crushed and is often described as having a roast beef smell!
Stinking Iris likes neutral, well-drained soils and will tolerate full sun, or some shade. It can also tolerate very dry periods. It makes an ideal plant for wildlife, cottage or formal gardens. Ideal when looking for structure and colour, particular over bleak winter months.
Flowering: June to August
Height: 80cm
Colour: Purple and yellow
