Common in woodland or any well drained soils and one of the pioneer tree species first to colonise open ground and heath. Its light frame and elegant drooping branches make it a good tree to add to gardens, and it can be pollarded and coppiced to manage height. They are fantastic for wildlife, providing food and habitat for birds, animals. insects and fungi.
