A deciduous perennial grass that occurs in a wide range of habitats, particularly in bogs, mires, wet heaths, moorland and also on cliffs. Favours seasonally wet flushes. It is a terrific native ornamental grass. It grows in clumps, having erect leaves. In the summer, tall spikes of purple flowers emerge and in the autumn, the grass turns a distinctive shade of yellow.
A species that has declined dramatically. Has associations with many different butterflies and provides good ground cover for all sorts of wildlife.
