Hound's-tongue is a biennial herb of disturbed ground. Found in coastal areas on shingle, sand, open grassland and gravel. It is a softly hairy plant that produces clusters of maroon red flowers. The plant receives its name from the long grey leaves that resemble a dog's tongue. It has declined rapidly in the latter decades of the 20th century.

Excellent for pollinators.
