Field Scabious is a tall, striking perennial, which produces large lilacky/purple pincushion type flowers. It likes well drained soils and can bee found on grassy banks, open hedgerows and meadows. It is a perfect plant for gardens. A species in decline.

Species of scabious were often used to treat Scabies.

It is the foodplant of the Narrow-bordered Bee Hawk-moth and it is often used as an alternative foodplant of the Marsh Fritillary butterfly.

It is adored by bees and butterflies.
