Common Elder is a deciduous shrub, or small tree, of fertile soils. It is found in a wide range of habitats, including woodlands, hedgerows, grasslands, roadsides and even waste ground. A show stopping summer shrub, with highly fragrant flat sprays of flowers, followed by jet black seeds.

The flowers are good for pollinators and the berries are eaten by birds.
