A perennial, native, loose shuttlecock-shaped fern. The leaves are more finely divided than Male ferns. The triangular scales on the stem have a distinct dark centre, which is a diagnostic feature of this species.
Suitable for woodlands, hedgerows, gardens, walls, wet grasslands, heaths and bogs. Grows in full sun and deep shade. Deciduous species.
Provides excellent cover for insects and small mammals.
