Hesg y Tywod
A spreading native sedge for sandy soils and coastal gardens. Excellent for beach stabilisation.
Sand Sedge is a hardy, perennial native sedge, naturally found on sandy heaths, dunes and coastal grasslands. With its fine, grass-like foliage and excellent ability to thrive in free-draining soils, it is a useful plant for wildlife-friendly gardens and naturalistic planting schemes.
Sand Sedge thrives in full sun and light, sandy, well-drained soils. It is particularly well suited to dry, nutrient-poor conditions where many other plants struggle. Once established, it is tolerant of drought and is well adapted to exposed coastal environments.
This species spreads by means of long, creeping underground rhizomes, helping it colonise open sandy ground and bind loose soil. It can form spreading patches over time, so it is best planted where it has room to grow.
As a natural component of British dune and heathland habitats, Sand Sedge contributes to the biodiversity of these specialised environments. Its foliage provides shelter for small invertebrates, while its underground rhizomes help stabilise sandy soils and support the development of natural dune vegetation.
Plant Sand Sedge in a sunny position with sandy or gritty, free-draining soil. It requires little maintenance once established and is an excellent choice for coastal gardens, sandy banks, wildlife areas and habitat restoration projects.
Height: Approximately 15–30 cm
