A deciduous shrub, with yellow flowers that turn to drooping red fruit in autumn. Its spiny branches make it good for hedging and it will also thrive at woodland edges. The flowers are a nectar source for invertebrates and the berries are a food source for birds and humans! Our native barberry, not to be confused with the purple garden cultivars, spread in the wild by birds.

Food plant of the threatened Barberry Carpet and Scarce Tissue moths.

Height: up to 3m

Flowers: May to June

Colour: yellow
