Common Cotton-grass is actually a member of the sedge family and not a true grass. The seed heads of this plant producing really distinctive fluffy cotton-like heads, from which it gets it names. Walkers often use this plant as a sign post to avoid wet/boggy areas.
Cotton-grass grows in wet, boggy areas.
